Mickey Herskowitz, a professional ghostwriter and longtime Bush family friend, conducted a series of interviews in 1999 with then-candidate George W. Bush for what was to become A Charge To Keep, Bush's campaign book. Herskowitz became increasingly uneasy with the process as Bush evaded questions about his Air National Guard service and expressed hope that he would be able to use the political capital from a small war to pass his domestic agenda and thus become a "great" president. Eventually, all of Herskowitz's recordings and papers were taken back and sanitized by the Bush campaign before the book was published. Herskowitz discussed the project in a revealing interview with Russ Baker in 2004. Additional information was added in a more recent article by Baker.
